The University of Porto in Portugal and UNAM signed an agreement that paves the way for academic collaboration across many academic disciplines. The University of Porto was represented by its Vice President Prof Maria de Fátima Marinho.

The agreement will enable both institutions to identify specific areas of collaboration and to design academic projects that stand to increase the scientific and cultural partnerships between Namibia and Portugal.

Visiting the site, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation confirmed that the archaeological findings have been kept "according to international standards”, since their discovery, in 2008. The Secretary has stated that "we have told Namibian authorities that these findings should be put in exhibition, in both countries, and that Portugal is working in this issue”. She added that "if the discovery had been made by a private company, Portugal would not have hesitated to claim the treasure’s property”.

The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia in Porto was awarded with the Medal "Ordem da Comenda Mérito Almirante Tamandaré”, in a ceremony held by SOAMAR Portugal, in Cascais. The award was created by the Brazilian Government in 1957, to recognize the services of authorities, institutions, civilians or soldiers, regarding the promotion or strengthening of the Brazilian Navy’s traditions, honouring their deeds or heightening its historical personalities.

28 students of Portuguese Language of Andimba Toivo ya Toivo School in the Ohangwena region (650 km north of Windhoek) visited the Embassy last Friday as part of a field trip to Windhoek which also included a visit to Diogo Cão Centre. All the students study Portuguese Language in Andimba Toivo ya Toivo School, which offers Portuguese as a foreign curricular option since 2015. The school is part of wider group of 22 Namibian schools that have joined so far the Portuguese Language project agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Governments of Portugal and Namibia in 2011.

The number of students attending Portuguese classes in Namibia has grown significantly, after the agreement signed between the Portuguese and the Namibian Governments.

Angelina Costa, deputy-coordinator of the Portuguese Institute for Cooperation and Language in Namibia, told Lusa News Agency that "we can see there is an increased interest in the Portuguese language in Namibia. When we signed the memorandum of understanding, we started with roughly 280 students and now we have 1 800".

Namibia hosts AU meeting

Namibia hosted the committee of heads of state of the African Union (C10) on United Nations Security Council reform in Windhoek, from 13 to 15 January 2016. The permanent secretary of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Mrs. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, said the C10 is an initiative of the African Union aimed to accelerate the United Nations’ reforms, particularly in the Security Council.

He made these remarks in his New Year message issued by the Office of the President on Thursday, New Year's Eve. The resuming of the Angolan kwanza conversion into Namibia dollar and Namibia dollar into kwanza has been delayed. On 2 December 2015, the exchange agreement has been suspended in Namibia. However, the central banks of Namibia and Angola have agreed to implement an alternative mechanism that will allow for the exchange of the two currencies at certain commercial banks in Angola.

On last November 11, 2015 took place at the Embassy of Brazil in Portugal, the award ceremony of the Navy Friends Association,  organized by the Society of Navy Friends (SOAMAR) and in which the Honorary Consul of Namibia in Porto, Mr. Hortêsio Simaria da Silva, was one of the awarded.

The Rear Admiral of the Navy of Brazil, Mr. Flávio Rocha, the President of SOAMAR-Brazil, Mr. Leonel Porto, and the President of SOAMAR-Portugal, Mr. Artur Victoria, among others, attended the ceremony.

Namibia has committed itself to eradicating poverty by 2025. A resolution to this effect was taken at the just ended National Conference on Wealth Redistribution and Poverty Eradication.

Effectively this target would be achieved under President Hage Geingob’s ten year tenure in office, if he is voted into office for a second term.

The Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, which organised and hosted the conference was tasked to implement appropriate programmes to ensure that Namibia beats by five years the global deadline for poverty eradication (2030), as per the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The conference was officially opened by President Geingob, who reiterated his resolve to fight poverty and hunger in Namibia. He called on all institutions of government and the private sector to work together in the fight against poverty, while emphasising the coordinating function of the Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.

The Bank of Namibia has dismissed speculations that the currency conversion agreement between Namibia and Angola has brought about a liquidity crisis in the country.

Bank of Namibia’s spokesperson, Ndangi Katoma, says contrary to such allegations the bank "has not observed any liquidity crisis in the Namibian banking sector.”

Data shows that during the first nine months of 2015, the overall liquidity position of the banking industry averaged N$3 billion, in comparison to N$3.2 billion over the same periods in 2014 and N$2.8 billion 2013. "The liquidity levels of the banks have, therefore, been within the normal ranges,” says Katoma.

Attended to the opening ceremony, Her Excellency Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of International Affairs, Mrs Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Her Excellency Ambassador of Namibia in Portugal, Mrs Frieda Nangula Ithete. At the ceremony, the Honorary Consul revealed as his priority the development of the commercial and business relations between the two countries "the opening of this Consulate is an important mark in the evolution of the relationships of these two countries. We will work to enforce that relationship and approximate Portugal and Namibia." - Mr. Simaria da Silva said.
