Namibia hosted the committee of heads of state of the African Union (C10) on United Nations Security Council reform in Windhoek, from 13 to 15 January 2016. The permanent secretary of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Mrs. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, said the C10 is an initiative of the African Union aimed to accelerate the United Nations’ reforms, particularly in the Security Council.
She also said the committee, which includes Namibia together with heads of state from Sierra Leone, Algeria, Congo Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia, is to deliberate on the reform and democratization of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, which has been the focus of global attention in recent years.
"The Security Council remains the principal organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security, however the current composition of the Security Council does not reflect equitable geographic representation,” Ashipala-Musavyi stated.
She finally referred the C10 Summit will play an important role in intensifying efforts of advocating, canvassing and promoting the common African position - as enunciated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
The summit is also to reaffirm African unity and solidarity on the reform of the United Nations Security Council.
